I haven’t read it but here are some reviews. It does look like an interesting take on an a frequently plotted subject (the near future and the increasing role of government).http://www.needled.com/archives/2006/05/…

Book Review: The Bar Code Tattoo
Suzanne Weyn’s The Bar Code Tattoo is a slightly futuristic book, taking place in the first quarter of the twenty-first century. Set on the East Coast of the United States, it’s reminiscent of 1984 in that everyone’s actions are tracked by the government. By the time the protagonist, Kayla, a seventeen year old artist-to-be, celebrates her birthday, it’s almost mandatory to get a bar code tattoo. Stores would rather not take your money when they can scan your arm; your grades, credit history, and just about everything else are in your tattoo code. Kayla is uneasy about getting the tattoo, especially after her father’s suicide. This is an interesting twist when compared to today’s teens, many of whom count down the days until they are old enough for their first legal tattoo. There are a few plot twists that will keep the reader guessing.
I’ve read better Young Adult books. However, The Bar Code Tattoo is a good book for a teenager because it allows for healthy discussions about everything from dating to how much impact or interference one’s government should have on one’s life, and from how much impact or interference corporations should have upon government, to what can happen when following what everyone else does goes too far. In general, I recommend any book that will get kids to read and which will encourage dialogue. This book does both.
A sequel is due out in July of 2006.

the bar code tattoo is a great book that i like for the description of the future and how it was then. Kayla has a journey to go to white face mountain to be free of the barcode tattoo eveyone is getting. The barcode tattoo is ruining everyone lifes like her best friend amber moving to her mother setting her tattoo on fire. People are having a horrible time because the bar code tattoo is revealing genes that they don’t have. and the people who do have the tattoos are going insane to take it off. Kayla is betrayed in decode and realizes mfumbe is willing to do anything to help her. she learns that maybe this timing is not good with the barcode tattoo that’s effecting everyone.
