let me rephrase. if i were to choose a tattoo out of those tattoo books in the store would it be cheaper. ALSO, do the tattoo artist just go over the stencil or outline OR do they do that and add detail to make it realistic. FOR EXAMPLE: a stencil of jesus. would they just go over the lines, or, would they go over the lines and add detail.

They are cheaper but I don’t think it should matter. The tattoo you pick out should not be picked because it was cheaper. And I am not judging or being condescending. It’s just a good rule of thumb.
And an artist will do whatever you tell them to unless it’s not in the best interest of the tattoo. Sometimes the tat might be too small to add detailing, or better left as an outline to prevent ink bleeding into a huge blob. That’s what happened with my last tat. The most important thing is to listen to your artist’s advice but also be clear about what you want done and try your best to work with him/her. After all, they are just trying to do good work and make you happy.
A good tattoo artist goes by the hour, not size. A mediocre one does size/color. Book ones are unoriginal, and are not tattoo worthy. Having an artists draw something up for you is way better. Good tattoos aren’t cheap, cheap tattoos aren’t good.
This is pretty average:
A small deposit when making the appointment if you aren’t a walk in.
$50 -$75 minimum tattoo fee
$100 per hour
10% -15% tip
Usually, if you have an easier design, and not too big, you would do the minimum or 1 hour.
If you have a complicated custom job, or a big piece that will take a lot of time with outlines and fill ins, it will take a few hours at the hourly rate. Often outline is one visit, and the fill in is 1 or 2. Or if there are several colors = several visits to fill in each,.. etc.
An artist could take a ‘flash’ piece and just stencil as is, but put the colors of your choice.
Or they could take that idea and expand upon it if you were clear with your wants. So, if you liked the said ‘Jesus Flash’, but wanted the arm a bit different and some clouds added and 2 angels and a sheep, well they could do that or take the idea and do a custom job. You could bring in 10 pictures and each had an element that you wanted in your piece, and then you and your artist could come to an understanding, and he/she would draw it out until you both were pleased with it before tattooing. Many possibilities.
The more time spent, = more money.
But don’t cheap out, you’ll end up wanting it reworked or covered up. It is best to pay top dollar and get quality work. Then you will love your decision and your tattoo. Smiles all around!
Good luck!
They do whatever you want. If you want them to add detail, they will. If not, they will just make a stencil. It’s up to you, considering you’re the one getting it and paying for it.
Price goes up with size and the amount of color(s) used.
Depends on the artist really. Usually the book is cheaper cuz everyone and their mama got tats out of it but when you make up your own they got to draw it up and everything.
Depends on the artist. Usually book ones are cheaper.
